Chevening scholarship

About the programme

The aim of the British Chevening Scholarship Scheme is to bring to the UK present and future leaders, decision-makers and opinion-formers, including particularly able students from countries with whom the UK's economic relations are expected to develop. Preference is given to candidates already established in a career. Awards are given annually to students from awide variety of countries and can cover all or part of the cost. The programme is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and managed by the British Council world-wide. For general information on the British Chevening Programme, visit web site: Chevening Scholarships website

Selection of candidates is carried out by British Embassies and High Commissions in consultation with the local British Council Director. Applicants should, therefore, be resident in their home country when they apply.

Chevening in the Gambia

The aim of the British Chevening Scholarship programme in The Gambia is to give opportunities to young, successful and ambitious professional people to study or train in the UK.  The Gambia programme started in1984 and has supported about 38 Gambians to date who have undergone long-term taught academic post-graduate courses in various higher education institutions in the UK. The majority of our Chevening scholars are back in The Gambia and contributing towards the socio-economic development of the country based on the skills and knowledge acquired from their training in the UK.  Gambians who have had the opportunity to study under the Chevening Scholarship Scheme, in collaboration with this office, launched the Chevening Alumni Association in The Gambia on 16th September 2003. Such an association is intended to bring those Chevening beneficiaries together and harness their skills for the betterment of The Gambia and to promote good bilateral relations between the UK and The Gambia. Returned scholars are being encouraged to join this alumni body for the purpose of networking.
