Bilateral relations

Politically, the British Government strongly supports The Gambia'scommitment to democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.

Introduction

Historically the UK has had strong ties with the Gambia and relations have spanned a period in excess of 100 years. The Gambia became a British protectorate in 1894 and gained independence from Britain in 1965. In 1970 The Gambia became a Republic following a referendum. However, although now relatively strong and healthy, relations were strained following the 1994 coup and following the expulsion of our then Deputy High Commissioner in 2001.

The relationship at all levels is now close and multifaceted, and is based upon our areas of shared common heritage and mutual respect between two sovereign nations. We have a shared aim to work for the political and economic development of both The Gambia and Africa.

Politically, the British Government strongly supports The Gambia's commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. As partners in the Commonwealth and as members of the United Nations, we share many common ideals on such issues as peacekeeping, sustainable development, poverty reduction and terrorism.

Development Assistance

The UK remains the leading bilateral donor to The Gambia in terms of engagement in policy discussions, direct assistance and assistance through multilateral organisations such as the EU, World Bank and United Nations agencies. UK development assistance is provided through the Department for International Development (DFID) on behalf of the British Government.

Commercial Relations

The UK is the main exporter to The Gambia with exports in 2001 of £18.5 million, a rise of 28% from the previous year. Imports for the same period were £7.5 million. The UK also provides the greatest number of tourists to The Gambia each year with an estimated annual figure of between 50 and 60,000.

Looking Ahead

The UK has had a long and fruitful relationship with The Gambia. We look forward to this continuing and indeed to yet closer co-operation in the future.
